NANS Kicks Against New JAMB Regulation, Calls for Probe of Ojerinde

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the new JAMB policy whereby candidates are re-assigned to universities outside their original choice. The new regulation introduced by JAMB to address a situation where certain universities received surplus admission applications has drawn the ire of the student body.

In a statement released Tuesday and signed by NANS Zone D general secretary (Comr. Obanobi Bidemi) and PRO (Comr. Olatinwo Jeremiah), the student body called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the accounts of JAMB, stating that the exam board and its leadership has been compromised.

Read the full statement below;

The fraudulent eligibility regulation of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been brought to the notice of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) Southwest Nigeria Zone. It is a con game, it is malicious, mischeavous, savage, lame and nonsensical.

Over 40 million Nigerian students at home and in Diaspora want the JAMB registrar to define the word “CHOICE of INSTITUTION”. Why would I be posted to a school I never applied for? Why would I be posted to a school above my parents’/sponsors’ means.

We saw this trend coming from last year when the myopic board reduced the options of institution of choice from six to three claiming it is to save students from the fraudulent activities of tertiary institutions in the process of admitting students.

We call on the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to begin a probe into the accounts of the admission board, its registrar and top echelon as it has been paid by proprietors of private tertiary institutions hence the bastardization of the admission exercise – a great semblance to the scandal that rocked the world football governing body, FIFA.

Nigerian students pass a vote of no confidence on the JAMB registrar and hereby call for the immediate sack of the JAMB registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde.

The mass failure recorded this year was an intentional act of the admission board so as to skew and enforce 250 as cutoff mark for public institutions and in turn send students who didn’t meet up to private institutions. NANS unequivocally rejects this.

Over five million students across the six states of the Southwest including affected students will be mobilized to the office of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board office if this policy is not reversed immediately.

  • As I share my amicable opinion,no grievances to any junction, being fortunate among those to writing unn post ume,I think Jamb made a NICE mistake meaning.nice in the sense that 90% candidates will be admitted this year due to the reassigning factor.MISTAKE in the sense that jamb took us unawares, failed to define the meaning of CHOICE OF INSTITUTION, ought to have waited after the post ume exercise then reassign the unfortunate ones. But in thought jamb made a great policy. If not on the basis of corruption (money laundry),Note you that gaining your certificate in unn, unilag, unizik is not all but the impact of such cert. Remain bless.

  • Please guys can we please write what one could understand instead of all these abbreviations? Nigerian students are grammatically endangered day after day.

    • My brother, it’s really a problem to marry Nigerian students now. Social networking sites has made many Nigerians both graduates and the jambites to lack complete spelling, now many of them are used to abbreviations. Even while chatting, I caution any of my friends using abbreviations to chat with me, cause I find it meaningless and humiliating. Thanks for notifying this mistakes.

  • If it is possible that this intimidating body called jamb be erased from history…I am of the opinion that the country do that as soon as possible…because so many visions have been thwarted, hopes have been dashed, desires have been truncated, etc…If NANS doesn’t take a bold step to push the devilish ideas of the heartless jamb body in to the grave ASAP,then millions of destiny is at stake…and which is more, this devil-like man will continue his devil-motivated plight… remember that once a tree is rooted in the soil,it bears fruits according to his kind: it is high time we terminated every evil ambition against the future of this country…it is so saddening that the government of this nation allows such evil and genocidal acts, knowing fully well that the present and the future of this nation NIGERIA RESTS ON THE SHOULDERS OF THE POWERFULLY EMPOWERED EDUCATION SECTOR…I am of the concession that none of the man’s children studies in NIGERIA…perhaps that is the reason for his erroneous and inconsiderate STEPS…MAY GOD TERMINATE EVERY MAN AND HIS EVIL MANIPULATION AS REGARDS 2015 ADMISSIONS…

    • Bros. Please note that jamb are not mostly the cause of students not gaining admission, but post UTME is the general and majority cause. As I can witness and believe that many Nigerian students do beat the jamb cut off mark, but after making a successful results in jamb, post UTME will now render most students confused even if they make there results in the school; you will see some top lecturers collecting money to admit people who did not even sit for the exam and also working admission for there children and relatives.

  • It is not yet imaginable for this policy to come up after the denial of three(3) choice of institution but in all our Hope is in the Almighty GOD.
    Let us keep watching.

  • yes I agree with you, victor. but have they looked at it from another side. instead of bringing such policy thereby infringing the rights of the students to chose. They should allow all students write the post utme of the university of their choice, those that don’t make it into the university can then be reassigned to other universities at least this would be better. And also dis move should have been done since the sale of jamb forms so that students would know where they stand.

  • It wouldn’t be bad only if we students are granted d right to choose a second preferred institution by ourselves instead of Jamb. It’s’ not just d admission but the condition of environment. Let them be reasonable and listen to the voice of the students.

  • I think it would have been good if they will tranfer this student accordingly. ie if you apply in state university, JAMB will transfer you to another state university with lower applicants and if you apply for Federal University you go to another Federal University not private university. Student saw these private universities before they go in for government university. Some parents cannot afford these private universities ooooo. So i See it as indirect way of cutting these students off.

  • I think the policy should be restructured. Allow the students to write the post utme of the institution of their choice. And the ones that dont make it can now be forwarded to other schools that are short of candidates.

  • Hi pips.from my own point of view I’d suggest the ideal be welcomed. This option is meant ONLY for schools with LARGE NUMBER of applicants,of which these schools out of 100% they can ONLY ADMIT 40% to 50% of applicants thereby outlay the remaining 50% – that I think is quite frustrating. This is not a surprise though but it’s shocking to know that it’s true, cus these schools have a specific number of applicants that they can admit within a given year. There are schools with millions of applicants and in thesame set there are schools with just a few hundreds.JAMB is only trying 2 balance the equation and at thesame time put corrections to their foolish mistake of reducing the number of choice of institutions. Now this is where this JAMB thing comes in-the 50% that was laid off, JAMB now is trying to create an opportunity for those laid off candidates to gain admission in another school. The sad side of this JAMB thing is that u might get the admission but maybe not in the school u wishd. But I 4 one think it’s beta 2 get d aDmission rather 2 stay at home 4 one whole year again w
aiting 4 JAMB and repeating d whole unsure process again.I’m an aspirant of UNN.May The LORD help us all.AMEN.
