The Nigerian petroleum industry is the largest on the African continent. All petroleum production and exploration is taken under the auspices of joint ventures between foreign multi-national corporations (like Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, Agip, Total and Texaco; now merged with Chevron) and the Nigerian federal government.

This joint venture manifests itself as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, a nationalised state corporation. All companies operating in Nigeria obey government operational rules and naming conventions (companies operating in Nigeria must legally be sub-entities of the main corporation, often incorporating “Nigeria” into its name).

Oil Companies in Nigeria Salary Structure:

  1. Total E&P Nigeria
    Entry Level Salary: N7,000,000 – N12,000,000 per year.
    Total may be classified as the highest paying company in Nigeria today.​ Total Petroleum Nigeria Limited is a joint venture between NNPC (60%) and Elf (now Total) which produced approximately 125,000 barrels per day (19,900 cubic metres per day) during 1997, both on and offshore.
  2. Exxon-Mobil Nigeria
    Entry Level Salary: N6,000,000 – N10,000,000 per year.
    Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU) is a joint venture between the NNPC (60%) and Exxon-Mobil (40%) operates in shallow water off Akwa Ibom state in the southeastern delta and averaged production of 632,000 barrels per day (100,500 cubic metres per day) in 1997, making it the second largest producer.
  3. Chevron Nigeria
    Entry Level Salary: N6,000,000 – N9,000,000 per year.
    Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) is a joint venture between NNPC (60%) and Chevron (40%) has in the past been the second largest producer {approximately 400,000 barrels per day (64,000 cubic metres per day)}, with fields located in the Warri region west of the Niger river and offshore in shallow water.
  4. Shell Nigeria
    Entry Level Salary: N3,360,000 – N7,800,000 per year.
    Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC), usually known simply as Shell Nigeria: A joint venture operated by Shell accounts for 50% of Nigerian’s total oil production (899,000 barrels (142,900 m3) per day in 1997) from more than eighty oil fields.
  5. Schlumberger Nigeria
    Entry Level: N3,600,000 – N6,000,000 per year.
    Schlumberger is a multinational E&P oilfield service provider specializing in technology, information and management solutions in both the midstream and upstream sub-sectors. It is located at Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout Rd, Port Harcourt.
  6. Halliburton Nigeria
    Entry Level: N3,600,000 – 4,500,000 per year.
    Halliburton is a multinational upstream E&P service provider specializing in operational and reservoir solutions.​
  7. Seplat Petroleum Nigeria
    Entry Level: N2,400,000 – N4,800,000 per year.
    Seplat is a front line Nigerian independent upstream E&P company listed in both Nigeria and London stock exchange.​
  8. Oando Nigeria Group
    Entry Level: N1,800,000 – N4,800,000 per year.
    Oando is Nigeria’s largest independent conglomerate in the energy industry, including petroleum products marketing, supply & trading, exploration and production, and gas distribution, and the first Nigerian company to achieve a dual listing on both the Nigerian and Johannesburg Stock Exchanges.
    Oando is Nigeria’s largest indigenous oil company with a production output of 54,000 boepd and a market capitalisation of $894 Million.

Note that salaries quoted here are estimates based on previous calculations. Some of the oil companies may have reviewed their payment structure (downwards or upwards based on the prevailing economic situation in Nigeria). Natural Gas reserves are well over 187 trillion cubic feet (5,300 km3), the gas reserves are three times as substantial as the crude oil reserves. The biggest natural gas initiative is the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) Company, which is operated jointly by several companies and the state. It began exploration and production in 1999.

Chevron is also attempting to create the Escravos Gas Utilization project which will be capable of producing 160 million cubic feet (4,500,000 m3) per day gas reserves.

In 2008, the government prepared a Gas Master Plan that was intended to promote natural gas production and encourage the supply of natural gas to domestic power stations so as to help alleviate the country’s electricity shortages.
