[Breaking] FG Set JAMB Cut off Mark at 180, UNN Post-UTME Details To Be Announced Soon

FG Set JAMB Cut off Mark at 180.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has announced that the cut-off mark for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions for 2016/2017 Academic Session be set at a minimum UTME score of 180.

The 180 benchmark, applies to all universities and higher institutions in the country, including polytechnics, colleges of education, and others.

JAMB’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, after a long debate with delegates from various institutions, told journalists that no institution would go below the 180 cut-off set by the board.

He said: “180 is given, no institution will go below 180 this year, And some universities can go above it, I know University of Ife will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200 and also UI. All these ones stand but 180 as bench mark for others.

“This year we have more than enough candidates, we have over 1.5 million candidates so we will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious. Re-distribution is already ongoing, because it is embedded in the registration procedure.”

Meanwhile the Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu, has expressed concerns over the conduct of post-UTME in tertiary institutions.

Mr. Adamu, in his opening remark at the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions, said if there was confidence in JAMB’s conduct of the University Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), there should be no need for post-UTME.

The post-UTME is organised by various tertiary institutions to screen candidates who applied to such institutions and who had scaled through JAMB’s UTME.

“If the universities have problem with what JAMB is doing, they should come forward with it and we will address it.

“JAMB is one of the most active parastatals in the ministry; I expect that policies that would be beneficial to Nigerian students should be discussed at this meeting.

“I believe there should be no ground to lower the quality; Nov. 30 remains the closing date for 2016 admission.

“No institution should exceed its quota in admission; we will start issuing penalties to defaulting institutions.’’

However, Joe Ahaneku, the Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, argued that post-UTME was vital for quality assurance and maintenance of standard.

He said that his institution arrested 183 impersonators during its 2015 post-UTME, who were able to evade JAMB’s UTME.

  • I learnt that PUME exam is no longer in existence. True or False

    Reply
  • i heard in the news that postume is scraped this year is it true

    Reply
    • We are aware that there has been lots of confusion about the upcoming Post Utme following today’s report by a large section of the media that the admission screening exam has been cancelled.

      Here are the facts we have gathered so far and my personal opinion on some of the issues raised;

      1) The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, wants Post-Utme scrapped but majority of stakeholders in the Education sector, Vice Chancellors inclusive, does not want that.

      2) Similar situation was witnessed last year when JAMB came up with an unpopular policy of reassigning candidates from their preferred institution of choice but JAMB ended up reversing itself.

      3) The media appears to be sensationalizing the reports as there hasn’t been any clear evidence that the Federal Government indeed ordered the cancellation of Post Utme. Comments credited to Mr Adamu Adamu only shows that he is expressing an opinion of his alone.

      4) If any new policy that will cancel Post Utme and allow only JAMB to decide who is admitted to our tertiary institutions is introduced, it may likely work from next year as it will be very difficult to implement at this moment for a couple of reasons.

      5) Finally, allowing only JAMB to determine who is offered admission will surely create far more problems than Post Utme has ever created.

We therefore advise all UNN aspirants to continue to study for the screening exams. Don’t be caught off guard when the exam is finally announced and you discover that you are not fully prepared for it.
      All the Best!

      • please whats the cut-off mark for med and surgery? thanks

        Reply
          • I wanted going for med and surgery but I got 208 and I changed to microbiology. Do I have a chance for admission?

          • Stanley, if there were to be post ume, ur score in the exam would have boosted u and would have given u a chance to get microbio with that score.. Buh the way things are going now, with 208… U need the intervention of a pastor.

      • All you have said here I’d your personal opinion. If that of Federal government is a policy statement, yours will only be a wishful thinking probably for your personal interest. A lot of rot happened in UNN last session in their admission process. Sanity must return to our admission process to tertiary institutions. This is the genuine change Nigerians want.

        Reply
      • thanks a lot. if by God grace I got microbiology, how can I switchback to med and surgery after first year. just curious!
