[Breaking] National Assembly To suspend N75,000 UNN Laptop Fee

The House of Representatives has asked its Committees on Education (Basic and Tertiary) to intervene in the compulsory N75, 000 laptop fee charged students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The house unanimously took the decision following a motion under matters of urgent public importance sponsored by Rep. Bashir Babale (APC-Kano).

Moving the motion, Babale decried the university’s policy on compulsory payment of N75, 000 as laptop fee for the newly admitted students.

The university administration recently introduced a policy, which requires every student to own a laptop. “This policy is arbitrary, inhuman and so sad that they are making access to education difficult for the people. “Nigerians are anxious to study in order to contribute to the growth of the nation but this policy makes it difficult,’’ Babale said.

The legislator, who pointed out that education remained a vehicle for national development, stressed the need to correct imbalance in education. According to him, many citizens are living below the poverty line and students will find it difficult to pay the compulsory laptop fee. Babale added that the call to stop the fee became necessary in order not to deprive Nigerians access to quality education.

“In a situation where young people are complaining of educational imbalance, how can an institution come up with this kind of policy?’’ he asked. Babale further decried the situation where some tertiary institutions in the country solely depended on students to fund their activities. “Students are paying fees to construct roads and culverts in the universities.

“When we open the doors to schools, we shut the door of prisons,’’ he said. The Speaker of the assembly, Rep. Yakubu Dogara, referred the matter to the House Committee on Education for further legislative action.

  • i truly support the idea of every newly student to own a lap-top,but they should allow us to buy for our selves cos the 75k is too much,or those that can afford it should go ahead and buy from the school, while those that can not should be allowed to get even the fairly used one

  • Gosh, this is the best motion i’ve seen been moved by a Chamber in d two houses in Nigeria for many yrs now, actually Student owing a Laptop is extremely pleasing but subjecting him/her under intense pressure of mandatory acquisition 4rm u guys even in ur inflated prices is the thing that is Sickening there….Gosh! This is irritating……
So fellow students, we shud nt rejoice in fullness yet, bcos as it stands now, it’s still only a Motion awaiting Considerations n Approval,……
But my prayer is that it will be approved n Granted……..i am yet to believe this thing abt Unn, Unn of all people condescending so low to reap out some fucking/dubious money 4rm Students, even the less priviledged ones, thereby making Education a terror in the sight of many averaged families……
    GOD PASS UNN…….
    GOD HELP US ALL……..AMEN!!!

  • Their intervention is already too late.I can never forget what mom said to me before giving me this money to buy something that is not my priority ‘at the moment’,have they ever asked how many parents have seen 75000 in a long while. Its a digital world but there are other ways to have achieved this.We leave in critical times and cannot be compared to our brothers in developed countries where tech is even very cheap.

  • Please let it not be compulsory for every student to buy it from the school, some already have it from home, this is to help the parents/guardians from spending much. thanks.

  • they’ve urged there education committee to intervene. that makes no meaning until they actually intervene. I’m not towing d line of rejoicing until d intervention takes place cause we know how slow these legislators can be at times. this might linger till the registration is over and people have already paid through their noses by then any remedy would be difficult to be complied with but if they intervene speedily i think they would have done their jobs properly and I’d personally begin to change my negative thinking towards the legislature for it would be a prove that we actually have legislators who have not just their interest or that of the wealthy but also those of the poor masses. for those who’ve made payments your money cannot just go, a remedy would be made available like always in matters like these.

  • Going digital is not a bad idea, but must we do it with UNN ‘s laptop. Gosh I own a laptop with 1TB HDD and 8GB ram, what I’m I suppose to do with their 2gb crap. By the way, selling uniform laptop to students will only result in massive theft and when you lose such laptop you shouldn’t even bother to look for it cos you’ll just go crazy when every laptop you see resembles your own. They want us to own a laptop, fine, but we want to be able to choose and buy our own laptop.

  • The compulsion 2 buy a laptop 4rm the sch is wot is bad. If they want students 2 own a laptop, everyone shd be allowed 2 get it there own way becos all fingers are not equal. While it is affordable 2 some, it’s not 4 some. It shd not be made compulsory.

    • I Think the VC of the university of Nigeria is seriously broke and he needs money to feed his family that’s why he had to impose the laptop on we freshers . this is stupid and injustice! He doesn’t deserve to be d VC anyway. Punk ass family man.

  • I will never said that a student having laptop is a bad issue, but is as bad as a poison when it is mandatory my dear students of University of Nigeria Nsukka(UNN). why I said this is because it creates rooms for many such of crimes. some boys may go into stealing and so on and girls will be selling there bodies provided the money comes

And please let the school authorities also remember that some children are born with silver spoon while some are not. please for Christ seek, the earlier we consider ourselves concealing this issue the better we reduce the crime it will cause thanks.

  • This is nonsense, if it is compulsory that student will have a laptop, the University will tell them to buy not to pay to school. Every student will buy a laptop according to your financial capacity. some fairly used laptop is sold for N30,000.00 while some laptops go for 250,0000. student will left with chooce. some student have laptop before geting admission. what will happen to those ones. Pls Senate should look into it and stop them immediately

  • Am not against the laptop policy but am against the compulsion of it, A school can decide to sell laptop to It’s students its not a crime. But when you impose it on your students that’s where its not good. Those that paid for the laptop did it for two reasons, either they don’t know the capacity of the laptop or they are afraid of the school authority. installments payment or not some persons have laptops already some don’t like that 2GB RAM , AMD 1.3GHz processor. mine take on this, is that they make it optional if not Senate should scrap it entirely

  • I still believe that provided UNN has come up with the installmental payment for the laptop…. I believe it should not call for legislative ruling cos u gonna enjoy your stuff.

  • I think we need to move wit de trend of things. We cry always dat we’re backward, why cant we catch up esp now de world is goin digital. We talk one thing an do something else. How can we access e-library, e-bankin etc an cant encourage our students to own a laptop. He should know de payment is installmentally.

    • To acctually own a laptop is not a bad thing,, buh d money is too much, remember all fingers r not equal ,, d money is too much n its a china product according to what I gathered,,, those who already own a laptop r still forced to buy frm d skul,, dat is wickedness!,,,
we cant break d bank, just bcoz we wanna go digital or follow d trends of digital world ,, can’t we own fairly used laptops, its even stronger dan d so-called whatever dey r imposin’ on us,,

  • So if the payment is suspended what about those that parents borrowed money to pay for their children’s laptop and what about those that already paid for their laptop or those it mean that even if it’s suspended that it will still be paid later cos it won’t be fair if half of the newly admitted pays and the others yet to come doesn’t pay cos it can bring problem between those that paid and those that haven’t paid
