UNN student bags Arthur Peter Moller (APM) Scholarship

As part of its contribution to the development of Science and Engineering in the country, Arthur Peter Moller (APM) Terminals Apapa Limited has awarded scholarship to Ogbogu Somto Jerry who emerged as one of the recipients of the 2nd APM Terminals Engineering Students’ Scholarship in 2012.

Ogbogu who is a final year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka clinched this award having ranked among the top 50 Engineering and Technology undergraduates drawn from various Universities and Polytechnics in the country.

Dallas Hampton, APM managing director, who was represented by Kingsley Akhigbe, the head of Administration and coordinator, Corporate Social Responsibility Project for APM Terminals Apapa Limited, said that the scholarship was to support the final year activities of the beneficiary.

“The scholarship and industrial training programme was instituted as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which seeks active community involvement in every location in which APM Terminals operate; in both developing and economically developed countries. The scheme will afford beneficiaries the opportunity to acquire world class training and development with APM Terminals Apapa Limited,” he said.

He added that this was the second time the company was awarding scholarships to students and therefore planned towards expanding the scope of the scholarship and internship to cover other faculties. He further gave a brief insight into the company.

According to him, “APM Terminals Apapa Limited is a part of a global shipping community which includes interests in 61 ports and terminals in 33 countries and staffed by 24,000 professionals across 63 countries.”

Bartho Okolo, vice chancellor, while presenting the cheque to the beneficiary urged him not to betray the trust and confidence bestowed on him by APM Terminals.

The vice chancellor who was represented by Uchenna Nzewi, the director, CUDIMAC, commended the management of APM Terminals for their contributions towards the furtherance of education.

Furthermore, Okey Onyeoku, the dean, Student Affairs, extolled APM Terminals for their persistent effort in making contributions to the society in which they operate. He recalled that last year APM awarded scholarships to three students of the University.

While receiving the cheque, the elated Ogbogu attributed his success to diligence and hard work adding that he emerged the best out of about 30 students from UNN who competed for the scholarship.

“I feel very happy and special having received this scholarship,” he said.
