UNN Celebrates Christmas with Musical Concert of Ten Lessons and Carols
The Princess Alexandra Unity Hall and Theatre of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was filled to the brim as the University community gathered to commemorate the Birth of Jesus Christ with the first ever musical concert of ten lessons and carols packaged by the Department of Music, UNN, in collaboration with University Women Association (UWA).
The ten lessons concert, which featured 200 man choir, was divided in to five segments, each contained two lessons, while musical performances, that elicited thunderous cheers from the audience, were interspersed in-between the segments.
The first segment contained lessons that portrayed how the entire creation waited with expectation, the coming of the Messiah who, according to prophet Micah, was to be born in the small city of Bethlehem.
Leading the reading of the lessons was the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bartho Okolo, who took the first lesson from Romans 8: 18-21. The Vice-Chancellor was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof Malachy Okwueze.
Lessons announcing the birth of the Messiah were read in the second segment, while the third segment contained lessons centred on the visit of shepherds to the city of Bethlehem where the saviour was born.
Lessons in the forth segment were songs of exultation offered to God for the gift of Jesus Christ to humanity and the entire creation, while the last segment featured lessons of redemption and liberation of mankind as a result of the birth of Christ and offered prayers for peace and unity in Nigeria and Africa.
In his remarks during the carols, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the Department of Music and University Women Association for organising the concert and urged the audience to use the Christmas celebration to reflect on their essence of existence on earth and strive towards living in a better place in the afterlife.
Delivering a Christmas sermon titled “Behold your King”, the Bishop of Nsukka Anglican Dioceses, Rt Rev. Aloysius Agbo urged leaders in Nigeria to emulate the leadership attributes of Christ who never struggled for authority but earned his kingship through his love for mankind even to the point of dying for their redemption.
The clergy man, who anchored his message from the book of John 19:14, maintained that Jesus Christ was the solution to the numerous challenges bedevilling the country. He therefore urged Nigerians to acknowledge the kingship of Christ and experience positive changes in the country.
Explaining the uniqueness of the musical concert and carol of 10 lessons, the Head, Department of Music, Dr Sam Chukwu said that concert of 9 lessons was conventional while the additional lesson was to pray for peace and unity in the university.
Similarly, the President of University Women Association, Prof (Mrs) Kate Oreh, said that the carol was necessitated by the need to sow the seed of peace in the university community, stating that as mothers, UWA had the responsibility to propagate peace and make sure that it endured in the University.
The high point of the event was cutting of a birthday cake christened “Christmas cake of peace” by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Malachy Okwueze, who also represented the Vice-chancellor, Chairman, Senate Ceremonials, Prof Obi Njoku, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof Uchenna Anyanwu, Head, Department of Music, president of UWA, among other important dignitaries that attended the event.
