Tertiary institutions will conduct post UTME this year — Education Minister

Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics will Hold Post-UTME Exam This Year.

The Federal Government has announced that the entrance examinations usually organised by universities in Nigeria for admission seekers after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) will hold this year.

It would be recalled that the FG had last year ordered the scrapping of post-UTME for candidates.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who made this known while speaking in an interview with TheGuardian Newspaper in Abuja yesterday, said that universities could now organise post-UTME as a pre-condition to gaining admission into universities in the country.

Adamu however urged university authorities to make the fees for the screening affordable and not to impose huge financial burden on the parents.

“We have asked them not to impose huge financial burden on the parents. The burden should not be more than what they can bear.”

The minister said that the Federal Government had stopped the scrapping of the examination to fully understand what was going on in universities, adding: “We are now wiser.”

The education minister, who expressed confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), said the management of JAMB had remitted N5 billion to the Federal Government coffers, which happens to be the highest so far in the last 40 years of the board’s existence.

In 1988, the Federal Executive Council amended decree No. 2 of 1978 to empower JAMB to conduct matriculation examinations for entry into all polytechnics and colleges of education in the country and to place suitably qualified candidates in the available places in these institutions.

The amendments have since been codified into decree No. 33 of 1989, which took from 7th December, 1989. On assumption of office, the present administration set up a panel headed by Dr. Bala Usman to restructure the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The Panel has since submitted its report and its recommendations are gradually being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education.

  • The idea of sitting for jamb and also for post-utme is not ideal. If minister of education in nigeria wants to scrap jamb entirely in nigeria, they should go ahead and do it and allow students to go to the university of their choice to sit for their screening test after their waec.Simple! federal government should intervene to avoid corruption!
