Post UTME: Minister, VCs prepare for Showdown. To Hold Emergency Meeting Tomorrow

The Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, on Monday, again directed the nation’s tertiary institutions to stop the conduct of post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

“Those who have already advertised for the conduct of the post-UTME under any guise should stop the exercise immediately as any university caught conducting it will face appropriate sanctions.

“If any tertiary institution has conducted the post-UTME, such an exercise stands annulled and money taken from candidates must be returned immediately,” Adamu said in a statement.

The minister, who made this known through the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the ministry, Mr. Ben Bem Goong, also directed the National Universities Commission and appropriate departments in the ministry  to “communicate this directive to relevant agencies and institutions to ensure strict compliance.”

The minister has also summoned all vice-chancellors and rectors to an emergency meeting over the post-UTME, findings by our correspondents have revealed.

The meeting, it was learnt, would hold tomorrow in Abuja.

Adamu, while declaring open a Combined Policy Meeting on admission to universities, polytechnics and other higher institutions, three weeks ago in Abuja, scrapped the post-UTME.

But findings by our correspondents revealed that many institutions have defied the minister’s directive with some already initiating fresh modalities for the 2016/2017 post-UTME.

For instance, the authorities of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, have not only conducted the exercise tagged “MOUAU 2016 Admissions Intelligence Quotient Screening”, the outcome of the exercise is already on the university’s website. The university conducted the IQ screening between July 20 and 21.

At the University of Benin, where the two-week exercise kicked off on Monday (yesterday), at its Ugbowo campus, candidates registered for the screening with N2,000.

According its Head of Public Relations, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, the university will continue with the exercise until it receives a formal directive from the Federal Ministry of Education not to conduct the screening.

“We are doing our admission screening. The minister did not say that we should stop the screening.”

Osasuyi added that the post-UTME was necessary to select candidates from the thousands jostling for less than 10,000 spaces in the institution.

For Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, which has fixed its screening to start from July 4, its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chris Adamaigbo, declined comments on why the institution opted for the exercise despite the minister’s directive.

Adamaigbo only directed one of our correspondents to check the institution’s website for answers.

“Please, check our website and you will get the answer to your question,” he said.

At the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, candidates for the screening, which holds between July 5 and 20, registered for it with N2,000.

At the Lagos State University, Ojo, the authorities demanded N5,000 registering fee for the screening. The registration that started on June 9 ended on June 24.

For the Kwara State University, Malete, one of our correspondents gathered that the institution had concluded the post-UTME for the forthcoming academic session with the candidates paying N3,500.

The authorities of the University of Jos said they had yet to get a clear directive on the issue from the ministry.

The UNIJOS Assistant Registrar, Publications and Protocol, Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi, said the university had not received any official communication to enable it to decide on the new admission procedure.

But for the authorities of the University of Calabar and the Cross River University of Technology, they would wait for the outcome of the meeting with the minister before announcing their position on the process.

The Public Relations Officer of UNICAL, Mr. Effiong Eyo, said on Monday, “Tomorrow (Tuesday) all the vice-chancellors in the country will be meeting with the minister. It is only after that meeting that we will comment on the post-UTME.”

Also, the Registrar of CRUTECH, Mr. Gabriel Beshel, said the institution would wait for the outcome of the meeting before taking a position on the issue.

While the UNIUYO Director of Information, Dr. Godfrey Essien, said he would not comment on the issue, the Registrar, College of Education, Afaha Nsit, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Idorenyin Uko, said the institution had suspended the exercise in line with the Federal Government’s directive.

Meanwhile, the minister, who said the responsibility for admission to tertiary institutions lied with JAMB, insisted that “under no circumstance should anybody or institution take over that responsibility by proxy.”

He added, “For the avoidance of doubt, any educational institution after secondary education is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore, all tertiary institutions, polytechnics, colleges of education, universities or by whatever name it is called after secondary education must be subjected to admission through the JAMB.

“At the end of probationary admission by JAMB, the candidates can be cleared (screened) for final admission. For any institution with a shortfall in admission, such institution can revert to JAMB for supplementary admission. Clearing in this case (screening) entails only the verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists.

“After this, the candidates are qualified for matriculation. Such screening should be at no cost to the parents or students and should be done upon resumption in order to avoid unnecessary travels in search of admission.”

In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Ondo State, Prof. Friday Okonofua, has faulted the scrapping of the post-UTME.

The don said the development might create a greater crisis instead of solving the “perceived problems” in the education sector.

Okonofua, who stated this while briefing journalists on the planned inauguration of Friends of UNIMED Fund in Ondo, said the government did not make enough consultations before taking the decision.

  • Hello my opinion on the pume saga I think scraping of post jamb is a good idea but the timing should be considered first and the body called jamb should be modified before final decision is taking
What the university ought to do is to set cutoff marks for the various departments for instance Medicine 280 Law 270 other departments 250 While polys should cut 220 for all courses then COE should cut 200 for all courses This are my personal opinions Thank you

    Naija
    Anyways good morning all
Its a good idea to scrap post ume in the sense that it saves students and parents, the stress, risk and money.
    BUT
From what i observed for so long, JAMB is not credible enough to offer admission. Take for instance, this years exam was a mess especially to those that wrote within the first 3 days, 27th, 29th and 30th, many of them faced a lot of challenges, there was a centre in Lagos that not one exceeded 200, it was from 199 and below. The system and whatever involved was so bad that JAMB gave out additional 40 marks due to error here and there. A friend of mine received her result even before writing the exam. Now the minister has made his opinion made without considering the lapses involved in this year exam. For many rejoicing about the scrapping of post ume, how sure are you to gain admission this year? Are you not aware that cut off marks will become very high. In UNN alone, over 10,000 students applied for medicine and surgery and no matter what, dont you know that they wont admit more than 150 out of 10,000 thereby leaving the remaining 9,850 ** admissionless** (if there is any word like that) BUT Postume gives one a greater chance to compete but that doesnt mean the school will exceed d number they can admit. Have seen instances of someone have a score of 240 in JAMB, write postume and smash 350, the fellow still gains admission to Medsurg. Anyways, in all things, U guys should keep on preparing. Nigeria is a very unstable country, anything can happen. You may wake up one morning and find out te FG has said otherwise, thereby throwing you off guard. Just keep studying, its better you prepare and it doesnt happen than not preparing and it happens. WISHING YOU GUYS BEST OF GRACE AND FAVOUR. ##VIVIAN SKILLZ##

  • Please, actually to tell you the truth: the most dis-heartening part of this whole saga is that; ever since the initial announcement of the scrapping of post-utme by FG on june 2nd, UNN administration has’nt said anything about it. Do they know the type of psychological trauma their aspirants are being subjected to by their keeping mute on this very sensitive issue; I mean what do they expect an aspirant to do when he/she is completely lost, as to what to do. Please let them say something or do something so as to help the aspirants ascertain what next.

  • In my days in d nineties, jamb was reliable though I didn’t get admission in my first attempt but it should have been better by now. I feel for the parents as well as the students,it can be stressful financially and mentally so I support the scrapping of utme.

    Reply
  • Since post utme is not for all candidates that are seeking admission into tertiary institutions but for those that made they jamb, it is not necessary . Therefore the minister’s directive is wise let Nigerians embrace the change because at the initial time there was no post utme and stile everything was moving.

  • THIS MATTER OF POST UME AND JAMB
    is simple as ”abc”

Nigerians did not advocate for scrapping of Post ume so Mr Adamu Adamu it won’t work.
this is a democratic state Mr Adamu you should have conducted a referendum before going on with this useless and obnoxious policy of yours. this policy will help worsen things in this country.
I which to pull out my point though this little examination set be FG

    FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA
    PUTME/JAMB SCRAPING EXAMINATION

    instruction
answer only 3 questions and only deliberate on the one you choose

    SECTIONA
    1. Do you want post ume me scrapped
    ii.Why?
    2. is jamb a creditable body to offer admission?
    3. should jamb be scrapped ?
    SECTIONB
    answer only one question
explain why Adamu Adamu brought up this policy of Jamb draping

    1i.No
1ii.because I know that schools can’t offer admission all applicants and most applicants are not well behaved to be admitted so schools conduct screening exams to choose the good ones.

    2. Only a fool can call jamb a creditable examining body. if u can recall vividly 2015 jamb a student had 335 and applied UNN post UME but didn’t gain admission because he could not prove to the school how she got such a high score she had 160 in her Putme. she might have cheated in the examination.
How can Jamb offer admission to 2016
applicants when the whole Nation was waling, crying . A friend of mine received three different result from jamb 6 days to examination and after examination till date he did not see his result so many reported the same case. system failure was their screen examination saver only God knows what Jamb was planning when 30 minutes on exams the whole computers were all out of device and after 3 hour we were told to leave the examination hall that the computer have submitted already answering only 5 questions from English only I saw 170 and the other said he she did just 30 questions from government she go 200. how can such a body give admission in the world most populous black nation of divers culture and tribe.
as functions are divided in division of labour so should the function of admitting students be done so that the work load will be reduced and handled properly

    3. YES JAMB SCHOULD BE SCAPED
Minister of education has been influence by plutocrats who influence government policy to their benefits.

”Why did FG scrap PUTME top secrete leaked ”
hmmmmmm not to be told only to our president who is not easily corrupted but appoints currupt personnels into his cabinet

    • My brother normally if Nigeria is a country, thre shldnt be anything like post utme .. If universities want screening then JAMB shld be scrapped and students shld be allowed to apply to universities of their choice… Or.. We scrapped Post ume.. Universities extort money from poor Nigerians all in the name of screening.

We dont need to risk our lives and their lives of our dear ones, spend lots of money, etc all in the name of admission u might no get.

Instead of post ume.. They shld all have inputs in one examination body and one examination…

Jamb on the other hand has lost credibility. It needs to be restructed. For God sake why re they in a hurry to give results. If they want to prove efficiency why dont they display results immediately you submit? Thats how it happens in most developed country.

They should all stop playing with people lives.

  • Before JAMB came into existence, each college/ university conducted their own examinations for admissions.
In our day of JAMB in 1980, successful candidates (based on cut-off for each course of study/university) are issued an admissions slip. Screening as directed by the Honorable Minster was then done by the university/ Colleges. Provided the JAMB examinations are free and fair, there is no need for a second examinations by the universities. Rather each admission department of each college/ university should interface their activities with JAMB to enhance the credibility of the exercise.

Admission of candidate into a course of study does not mean issuance of degree certificate. Universities have years ahead to teach and exam these candidate before passing them out or not.
